IFAS is a wastewater treatment technology that combines conventional activated sludge with fixed and mobile film supports, providing greater treatment capacity and improving the efficiency in removing pollutants present in the water. The media (plastic supports) used, as in MBBR, are added to conventional activated sludge reactors, where microorganisms develop and form biofilm, increasing the treatment capacity of the system, providing a greater surface area for microbial activity and removing organic matter and nutrients present in the effluent to be treated.
Used in a wide range of applications, due to its advantages such as:
- Ability to increase wastewater treatment efficiency without the need for major changes to existing infrastructure;
- Increase in treated organic load;
- Nutrient removal efficiencies;
- Improvement in the quality of the treaty.
